Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties

On Saturday, July 15, 2017 - A Special Flag-Raising Ceremony was held in Honor of Sergeant Major Henry H. Black. The event took place at The Veterans Memorial at Jack Laughery Park in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.

Sergeant Major Black (born 1929 – deceased 2012) served as the 7th Sergeant Major of the United States Marine Corps from 1975–1977. During his career from 1948-1977, Sergeant Major Black served in the Korean War and the Vietnam War, and he was awarded a Silver Star, 3 Bronze Stars with Combat “V”, and a Purple Heart for his heroic actions. Sergeant Major Black was the first Korean War Vet to ever hold the billet of Sergeant Major of the United States Marine Corps,

The retiring of the previously flown American flag at the Veterans Memorial Park was presented to the family of deceased William S. Murray, Retired Master Sergeant; United States Marine Corps.

The VFW and the American Legion from Rocky Mount were present today in conjunction with the Joint Veterans Committee of Nash and Edgecombe Counties. The Marines present today to honor Sergeant Major Black were from the Marine Corps League Department of North Carolina, Commandant Jeffrey Jones and Sr. Vice Commandant Rick Thomason. Also present were Marines from the Marine Corps League Cpl. Suzi Sannes Detachment #1262 of Rocky Mount, the Marine Corps League Gold Leaf Detachment #1276 of Wilson, and the Johnston County Marine Corps League Carry-On Detachment #1236. – Semper Fidelis!
